The CPU is the brain of your computer, it is the CPU which executes and controls the flow of software programs you run, such as Windows, Word, Excel etc. All other components only exist to bridge the gap between you and your processor. They take your data and turn it over to the processor to manipulate, then they display the results.

The speed of the your CPU is the overall factor in the speed of your computer, which is why computers are named by their CPU speed. The CPU contains a microchip that regulates the timing and speed of all the computers functions. The chip includes a crystal that vibrates at a certain frequency when electricity is applied to it. The shortest length of time in which a computer can perform an operation is expressed as one clock, that is one vibration of the clock chip. The speed of clocks is expressed in megahertz (MHz). One megahertz is 1 million vibrations per second. So this derives how a PC is described as having a 500 or 1000 MHz processor, which means that the processor has been designed to work with a clock chip running at that speed.
The CPU resides on the motherboard, and is not connected to any other device. The CPU also has its own cooling fan, because when running at speed of 1,000 MHz the CPU gets very hot.
There are many types of CPU manufacturers but it is Intel who make processors for P.Cs , both Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Cyrix copy the function of the Pentium but at a lower cost.
