Access time
How long it takes to retrieve data from a drive in milliseconds, the access time is made up of seek time, settle time and latency.

AGP
Accelerated graphics port is an expansion slot on the motherboard that gives a video card fast access to image data.

ADC
ADC or analogue to digital converter, a chip that converts an analogue signal to a digital value that a PC can manipulate

ASCII
ASCII or American standard code for information interchange.

AVI
Audio/video interleave is a file that combines of video and sound. (file name extension)

BIOS
Basic input/output system, the BIOS is a collection of software codes built into a BIOS chip that resides on the
motherboard. The BIOS chip handles some of the fundamental tasks of sending data from part of the computer to
another.

Boot or boot-up
This is the sequence of events that take place when your computer is first switched on. The term comes from the old idea
of pulling yourself by your bootstraps.

Bug
A flaw or error in software that usually causes the software to malfunction, freeze or crash when it encounters specific situations.

Binary
Binary is the computers native language. Binary consists of only two integers 0 and 1.

Bandwidth
The number of bits that can be sent through a network connection measured in seconds (bps, bits per second)

Bitmap
The most common graphic file that contains a record of the colour value of each pixel in the graphic.

BUS
The circuitry and chips that manage the transfer of the data from one device to another.

Browser
A PC program that displays pages from the Internet.

Black box
An expression for an electronic component, whose function is not understood.

Buffer
A buffer is a little space for data storage. The buffer is placed between two computer units, which exchange data.
Baud
A measurement of a modem transmission speed. One baud equals a transfer of one bit per second.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a standard for digital radio based (wireless) data transfer.

BBS
Bulletin Board System. It is a computer which the users can contact to gain access to downloads or updates,
etc.

Blind Carbon Copy, used in e-mails
