Clock
The clock is a microchip that regulates the timing and speed of the computer. The microchip includes a crystal that vibrates at a certain frequency when electricity is applied to it, the shortest length of time in which a computer can perform a task is one clock-one vibration of the clock chip.

CMOS
CMOS or complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor is a term that describes how the CMOS chip is manufactured. The CMOS retains crucial information about the hardware used by the PC, it does this because it is powered by a small battery.

CPU
CPU or central processing unit is the processor microchip that processes all the information used by the computer.

Cache
Caches are small, fast memory storage's, which data is copied when it is retrieved from RAM. There are two levels of cache, level 1 which is located on the motherboard separate from the processor and level 2 which is part of the processor, level 2 cache is the fastest.

Capacitor
A component that stores an electrical charge

Cluster
Is the smallest unit in which data can be stored on a drive.

Circuit board
Metallic traces printed on fibreglass panels that carry electrical signals.

CRT
Cathode ray tube.

CD-R
CD-R or CD-Recordable, is an optical drive that allows you to write data to it, but once written the data cannot be erased or changed.

CCD
Charge-Coupled Device, a light sensitive unit that used in scanners, digital cameras etc.

CGI
Common Gateway Interface

Cookie
A small files which an Internet server
places on your hard disk.

Dialog Box
An on screen display that allows the user to select among several choices to determine how a program operates.

DRAM
Dynamic random access memory.

DIMM
Dual in-line memory modules.

Data transfer rate
The number of bytes or megabytes transferred from one device or component to another in a second.

Directory
Also called a folder, contains a set of related flies.

Digital to analogue converter
A chip that converts digital values into an analogue wave form.

Dot pitch
The distance between the nearest two pixels of the same colour.

DVD
DVD or digital versatile disk, a form of optical storage that has two layers on each side of the disk to store data.

Domain
A group of computers on a network that are administered as a unit.

DSL
Digital Subscriber Line. A new modem technology which provides much faster transmission speeds on normal phone lines.

DirectX
A collection of programs, which enables much better control of the hardware in games and other multimedia programs. DirectX includes DirectDraw, DirectSound, DirectSound3D, DirectPlay, DirectInput, and DirectSetup.

Domain Name System

Download
To copy data (like programs, or applications) from an Internet computer to your own PC, using a modem.

DLL
Dynamic Link Library is a file containing a collection of small programs.(file name extension)

DPMS
Display Power Management System. A standard for screen energy saving. The screen "shuts off" after a specified period of time.
